The Question of Puerto Rican Statehood

Tonight I've been reading lots of negative on social media about the latest bell ringing for Puerto Rican statehood. Many expressing fear that the federal government (us) might inherit Puerto Rico's massive debt.

It's important here to remember Puerto Rico is already a territory of the United States. The island has been under US control since 1898 and its people have been US Citizens since 1917. As a practical matter, the US Government already bears much responsibility for the economic conditions currently plaguing the island territory.

Why would Puerto Rico want statehood? Puerto Rico, the 51st state, would gain the right to vote in presidential elections, two U.S. Senate seats and five US House seats. From their perspective, that's a significant betterment from the one non-voting delegate currently representing the territory.

They are US Citizens and can serve in our US Armed Forces, but they have no federal representation. Support their statehood or not, but do so knowing that if you were a US Citizen residing in Puerto Rico - you'd demand representation or secession.

A US Citizen serving in our US Armed Services deserves the same representation allowed to you and me. And, that soldiers family deserves the same.

Aren't they serving to defend exactly the same freedoms and liberties we cherish?
